Dealing with Protest

COVID19 UPDATE

Since the start of the pandemic, we have redesigned our accredited two day ‘Dealing with Protest’ course and have successfully delivered it virtually, using Microsoft Teams. It is delivered by an experienced instructor using a mixture of personal discussion, PowerPoint slides and videos.

The aim of the course is to mitigate against the unlawful effects of protest and demonstrations. Eclipse recognises that some clients’ activities can be contentious and that they may attract protest or demonstrations.

The course covers 3 modules:

Module 1 – Understanding the Legal Framework & Understanding the Police Response to Protest.
The Legal Framework aspect discusses the starting point and rights of protest encompassed by The Human Rights Act. This is followed by a review of the boundaries and scope of Security Officer responsibility and leads into key legislation, Citizen’s arrest & being recorded whilst working. The second part of Module 1 illustrates what you can reasonably expect from the Police in response to protest, including their methodology, structure and the 5 step approach to removing protesters.

Module 2 – Understanding the Structure and Tactics of Protest.
This module explains the differing levels of protester activity, what motivates them, who may be targeted by them, and what tactics have been used in the past; to enable you to assess the risk to your organisation.

Module 3 – Appropriate Response to Protest (LEAPS, CALM5 and 5 step approach ).
This focuses on how an organisation can minimise protest activity escalation, where possible, using assessment models which illustrate when proportionate management, or individual intervention, may be required. We discuss a Communication tool (LEAPS) and Tactical tool (CALM5) to assist in doing so.

Whilst everybody has the right to protest this does come with certain responsibilities and limitations. In summary, the full input is primarily structured to lead the attendee through the challenges of dealing with protest by providing an over-view of the relevant legislation, understanding protest tactics and providing advice for staff to use when dealing with protesters.

This certified course is ideal for Senior Management and front line security staff.
